Privacy Policy
HelloKotoba (Kotoba) · Last updated: October 7, 2026
HelloKotoba helps you learn Japanese vocabulary and kana. This policy explains what information the app and website (hellokotoba.com) use and why.
Information we collect
- Account information (optional). If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive your name, email address and profile photo as shared by that provider (Apple may provide a private relay email). You can use the app without signing in.
- Learning data. Your progress, bookmarks, visited words, quiz and practice results, kana mastery, study streak and daily goal. Without an account this stays on your device; with an account it is stored in your account so it can sync.
- Notification token (optional). If you turn on notifications, we store a push token for your device so we can send study reminders. You can turn this off at any time in the app or in your device settings.
How we use information
We use it only to provide the app: sign you in, save and sync your progress, and send reminders you opted into. We do not sell your data, show ads, or use it for tracking across other companies' apps and websites.
Services we use
The app uses Google Firebase (Authentication, Cloud Firestore and Cloud Messaging) to store account and progress data and deliver notifications, and Sign in with Apple and Google Sign-In for authentication. These providers process data under their own privacy policies.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your account data while your account exists. To delete your account and its data, contact us using the link below and we will remove it. Data stored only on your device is removed when you uninstall the app or clear site data.
Children
HelloKotoba is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes
We may update this policy and will change the date above when we do.
